Every day, the Earth is telling us something.
Rain is falling—or not falling. Temperatures are rising and falling. Oceans are warming and cooling. Atmospheric patterns shift, droughts develop, wildfires spread, outbreaks emerge, storms intensify, and sometimes events occur that surprise us.
We have more information about the Earth than ever before. Satellites, observations, models, forecasts, and increasingly powerful data-driven methods allow us to see patterns that were difficult to observe only a few decades ago.
But information alone is not enough.
We need to understand what is happening, what might happen next, and what that information means for people and decisions.
This is where prediction becomes important.
A forecast is not a promise about the future. It is information about possibilities. Sometimes the signal is strong. Sometimes uncertainty is large. Learning to communicate both the signal and the uncertainty is just as important as producing the forecast itself.
And ultimately, prediction matters because decisions happen before we know exactly what the future will bring.
A farmer deciding when to plant. A community preparing for heavy rainfall or wildfire. An organization planning humanitarian assistance. A water manager thinking about the months ahead.
Better information can help people prepare earlier and make better decisions.
That is the idea behind Earth Information for Society.
Here, I want to share observations, forecasts, data, research, interesting scientific papers, and occasional quick analyses—not as a formal journal, but as a place to explore useful ideas about our planet and its future.
Sometimes it will be an ENSO forecast.
Sometimes an extreme rainfall event, wildfire, outbreak, or another event unfolding somewhere in the world.
Sometimes a figure that makes me stop and ask, why does this look like that?
And sometimes it may simply be a scientific paper that is worth talking about.
The goal is simple:
Understand Earth. Improve prediction. Serve society.
